FAQ candidate: Phoner work as a System Service

Phoner work fine as a windows system service. Verified on WXPSP3. But work only in the answering machine mode (receive voice message by SIP account, create MP3 file and email it, visible control window is not necessary) If you want to do something with the control window, you have to stop windows service and run program shortcut. Than control window display.

This is the way to made Phoner a bit more reliable (I don`t try to say Phoner is no reliable now Smiley If the program crash for some reason, it will not been started again until user do this. If service crash, system try to restart it immediately.

Tip for Phoner author: What about if phoner.exe on startup check if other phoner.exe is in the memory (possible phoner service instance) and try somehow connect control windows to running phone service instance. This allow users to control phoner without stop service first.

Hello Petr,

you use Phoner as a service? Please tell us how you made it work. May be, there are other users interested in reading how to achieve this.

Sincerely, Jens

Sure I can, it`s trivial:

Download this http://svobodnasit.cz/technicka-podpora/nssm-2.0.zip, unzip the .exe file into c:\%windir%\system32\ and run from command prompt: "nssm install Phoner path_to_phoner.exe" and service with name Phoner will be installed on the system. Than you have to do "net start phoner" to start it.

If you want to remove this service, you have perform this: "nssm remove Phoner"

But keep on the mind this is suitable for only very special case of use. When you decide to run Phoner as a service, you have NO ACCESS to program control windows. Including you cannot answer call manually, when somebody calling you. (I have funny story with my girlfriend which cannot find the program on the desktop, but she hear ringing from the speakers until 20 seconds period elapse and answering machine start playing notice. She was totaly confused... Wink

Anyway: happy "servicing" with Phoner, which is GREAT app....

P.L.

There was never the intention to run PhonerLite as a service! If that worked in older versions, than it was pure luck. Sorry.
